Century 9 Inspired

Michael is the Director and Training Chef of Century 9. In 2016 God gave Michael a dream to open a restaurant in Cambodia. After years of dreaming and processing, the dream became vision, and the vision reality. Michael and his team launched Century 9 Inspired in April 2018.

What is Century 9?

Century 9 is mens discipleship program that focuses on helping young men who have gone through trauma, abuse, trafficking, or any other painful experiences find healing and wholeness. We offer a way out of darkness. As part of our program we have a restaurant and catering operation that offers our guys practical job skills and the training needed to equip them to go after their dreams and live out the life they were created for.

What does Century 9 mean?

The name Century 9 comes out of prayer and time with the Lord. As Michael was praying into the vision of Century 9 he discovered that Cambodia has one of the oldest living cuisines in the world, it dates back to the 9th Century. In those days the Nation of Cambodia or the then Khmer Empire was a great power, creative influencer, and leader in the region. Over times of war and darkness much of these things have been lost and forgotten. The Lord spoke to Michael through this and said, this is about restoration. This is about remembering the lost and forgotten and reclaiming lost ground.

Restoration is not about going back

to the way things used to be,

rather to move forward reclaiming

what they were always meant to be.

What we do

"The Grace of God operates at a profound level in the life of a loving person." Brennan Manning

The first step to everything we do is to love. At C9 we are family. We believe the only way to find true healing is through relationship. Real, loving, accepting, grace filled, relationship. This takes time but without love, without relationship, healing doesn't happen.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always until the end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20

Jesus has given us all a mandate to disciple the Nations. We believe life on life discipleship heals people and healed people change the world. Our first step on our discipleship journey is relationship. We often have a house full of hungry young men or as our son calls them, "the guys". Much of our discipleship is done at a long wooden table over a nice home-cooked meal and for dessert some laughter, a few tears, or whatever wants to come out. All are welcome here. Below are a few other things we intentionally do together.

Study The Word

The Bible is the perfect guide to living our best life the way it was designed to live. It's also one way God reveals himself to us through life. We love studying the word with our guys. We slowly work our way through a book of the bible and meet together weekly to share and celebrate our discoveries. It's so much fun seeing the Word come alive in our guys.

Alpha is an 11-week course translated in Khmer, the local language, that creates a safe space where people can have conversation about faith, life, and God. Alpha explains the basics of Christianity and offers lots of opportunity for questions big and small. We began leading our guys through the Alpha Course in 2021 and we have been encouraged by their enthusiasm, their questions and their openness. Alpha also includes a retreat. The last one we did was lots of fun and a powerful time for each of them in their walk with Jesus. Which leads us to our next and probably the most important of all the thing we do. Experiencing God.

Experiencing God

"There is an essential connection between experiencing God, loving God, and trusting God. You will trust God only as much as you love Him. And you will love him to the extent you have touched Him, rather that He has touched you." Brennan Manning

This is probably the most important part of the discipleship journey. There is no substitute for experiencing the love, mercy, and grace of Jesus Christ first hand. These are a few of the way we make space for this.

Leading our guys on retreats out of the city.

Inner-healing art sessions

Encouraging moments of silence and solitude as part of our daily routine.

Job Skills Training

We opened our full service restaurant, Century 9 Inspired Eatery, in the heart of Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2018. Are mission was to provide a safe work environment to get young men coming out of darkness or young men who are at risk, back to work to regain their dignity so they can dream again, and get the practical skills needed to achieve all thats in their heart. We quickly gained a great reputation for tasty food, great service, and good people. We had many guys come to us looking for an opportunity and through C9 we've been able to love our city and touch many lives.

In 2021, like much of the world, Covid him us hard as a business. It was time to make some changes. We began doing food deliveries and signed a new contract with an International School to provide catering for their campus. This was great news, it meant we could move into a new space, keep all of our guys employed, and continue delivering delicious food to our customers around the city. Today things are still difficult due to Covid restrictions but our team continues to persevere. We are still cooking, training, and dreaming. We currently have some of our guys training online and elsewhere and one of our young men has applied, been excepted, and will begin the Swill accredited Academy of Culinary Arts Cambodia at the end of the year.
